A Million Ways To Die In The West offered the opportunity to watch him die a slow, agonizing death onscreen, in part because he had the formidable chutzpah to cast himself in the lead live-action role despite specializing in voice acting, and in part because he had the gall to cast Charlize Theron as a badass gunslinger who spends the film pining for the little twerp.īut what these detractors miss is that, at its best, A Million Ways To Die In The West is explosively, wildly funny, an anachronistic romp through the old West full of cartoonish silliness, like an elaborate mustache-themed production number featuring Neil Patrick Harris. We live in a culture that both reveres and resents enormous success, so I think there was a sizable contingent that wanted to see Seth MacFarlane, a guy who seems to succeed effortlessly at everything he does, fail in an extraordinarily intense, public, and humiliating way.

Kate: Given that a three-star rating signals to most readers a slightly above-average film, and the critical consensus placed the film in more of a middling-to-awful range, why do you feel it deserves a higher rating than most critics heaped on it?
